Slouchy pom pom beanie, free crochet pattern

I love a good slouchy beanie in the winter time, especially on the boys. 

I made this little thing the other night for Maddox while he was asleep and under estimated the size by a good 4 - 5 inches! I was sad since its SO cute and perfect for winter. I can always make him another one right? 

Heres the pattern for it, its super straight forward and will fit a newborn baby but i'll tell you how you make it bigger.

Hook size H

any medium yarn

We start out by crocheting a rectangle shape.

Chain 31 

{ you can chain as many chain stitches as you want, this determine the length of the hat from the forehead to the pom pom. So for this New born size hat i chained 31}

Row 1: Hdc in the 2nd chain from hook and in every chain across

Row 2: chain 1 and turn, Hdc in the back loop only across.

Row 3 - 24: repeat row 2

sew 2 sides together to make a tube. 

Using green, single crochet around the top of the tube twice. 

Using a yarn needle take a long piece of yarn and sew in and out of the top end of the tube (the end you didn't just single crochet) This will act as a draw sting. Once you sew in and out around the top pull it tight and tie in a knot and attach a big pom pom

Crochet Headband free pattern

I made this crochet head band the other night out of pure necessity! I refuse to put the heating on until at LEAST november, i know I'm crazy but I'm cheap ok?!

They really did the trick of keeping my head warm! Not even kidding. Im not really into the whole headband stuff because i hate flowers or bows on my head. I would wear this one though. 

Here's the pattern for you! 

Hook size : I 

Yarn: Any colour you like in a medium weight

Chain 11

Row 1: Hdc in each ch across (10 hdc)

Row 2: Ch 1 and turn, hdd in each back loop across

Row 3 - 38: Repeat row 2 (if you need it bigger or smaller just adjust the amount of rows)

Put the 2 ends together and single crochet them closed so you make a band

Round 1: chain 1, sc evenly around the edge

Round 2: chain 1, sc in every single crochet around. 

Tie off and weave in ends

Attach yarn to the other side of the band. 

Round 1: Sc evenly around the band 

Round 2: chain 1, sc in every sc around. 

Tie off and weave in ends

Crochet Acorn

Are you ready for the Autumn? Yeh, me too. In fact iv'e been ready since last autumn, I felt like we were cheated out of a winter last year and so I'm need need of some chilly weather. Don't forget to grab yourself some Boot Cuffs in preparation!

I love getting ready for the holiday season to start, even if that includes rotating all the boys clothes again and washing the blinds and windows! 

After seeing all the leaves starting to change on the mountains i decided i was in need of some autumn decorations! So i started with this ... 

An adorable little crochet acorn banner for my hutch.

I found it here and decided to tweak her directions by making the cup the acorn 'hat'. I followed the pattern and tied the acorn hats onto a chained line of crochet, really easy and simple. These little things didn't even need to be sewn into the cup, they just sit there {until little hands find them}

I love the autumn colours but i wanted to make this little banner a bit more fitting with my home decor! 

I used lion brands 100% Fishermans wool and cotton ease. I LOVE the wool.

After taking apart my huge bobble blanket i have had ALOT of yarn just chillin' out in a bag. I used some to make a chunky granny square blanket then decided to keep going on with the chunky theme and make this chunky chevron blanket. Bigger is better right now.

Hook size: Q

take 4 balls of yarn and bring the ends together to make one chunky piece like this ...

{ picture is used from my chunky granny blanket so thats why I'm making a circle}

Chain 34 {if you want to make it bigger chain multiples of 16 and add 2}

Row 1: Dc in 3rd ch from hook; dc in next 6 ch, 3 dc in next ch, dc in next 6 ch; 

*work 3 st dec in next 3 ch, dc in next 6 ch, 3 dc in next ch, dc in next 6 ch.

Repeat from * across. 

End by working 2 st dec in last 2 ch. Ch 2 and turn.

Row 2: Skip first stitch; dc in next 7 dc, 3 dc in next dc, dc in next 6 dc;

 *work 3 st dec in next 3 stitches, dc in next 6 dc, 3 dc in next dc, dc in next 6 dc.

Repeat from * across. 

End by working 2 st dec in last 2 dc. Ch 2 and turn.

Repeat row 2 until its as long as you want it.

Cloth Nappies (Diapers)

So recently we decided to take the dive and throw ourselves into cloth diapering. We have two little boys, Jasper is the oldest and he is 20 months and Maddox is the youngest at 3 months. Since Jasper is about to be potty trained we deiced that cloth nappies will be for Maddox only. WE LOVE THEM!! seriously not even kidding. We had talked about it for some time before hand just to make sure we knew what we were coming up against and if it was worth it. Our main concern was our pockets not the environment so we are LOVING the $50 a month we are saving!! they are so easy to clean and keep on top of, i was nervous about all the washing and the smells but i haven't had a single problem yet. I wash mine every 2 days. I have a HE front loader so i just whack them in on a small setting and they are done in 20 mins and dry in less than 10. Fantastic. The only 'con' i would say is that they are more bulky than a disposable but you can get cute colours so who cares right?!

Anyway, moving on from the pure new found love of cloth nappies ... we started out with the FuzziBunz brand with the pocket insert, which we like (nervous they could get a little hot in the summer time) but looking at them i decided that I CAN TOTALLY MAKE THIS MYSELF!!! one cloth nappy from fuzzibunz will cost you around $15- $25 dollars depending on what kind you get (we got the one size fits all) 

SO i got on google and had a look around at some of the ones that people have made themselves and i was inspired to give it a spin. I found a pattern or two but just didn't like the look of how they turned out. Thats when i got the idea to trace round my fuzzibunz and just match it to what i already had. Genius? probably....

So heres my pattern. I'm giving it away free, Its simple and straight to the point. I drew it out by hand and scanned it in so its probably not the most amazing pattern you've ever used but it certainly does the trick!

My ability to upload pictures in fancy pdf files is limited so i hope this works for you, if anyone has any ideas on how i can make the pattern better I'm all ears!

DIRECTIONS:
each pattern piece should be printed on a full A4 piece of paper, in american terms i believe thats 8x11?

the lines should meet up end to end and the right side of the paper should all be flush, make sense? Tape it all together and there you have a pattern!!

Then here comes all the 'fun' stuff' sorry i don't have pictures for a very detailed tutorial, i'll get round to that one day!

You will need ...
I found everything at joanns .. take coupons!!
1 yard of PUL fabric for the outer shell (priced at $12.99)
1 yard of Fleece for the lining (priced around $8.99)
3 yards of elastic ( priced at $3 for 3 yards)
snaps and snap tool to apply ( i found the tool VERY helpful snaps were priced at $7.99)
and a sewing machine

What you do. (I'm just going to assume those reading this have basic sewing skills, if you would like more detail feel free to ask!!)

* place the pattern along a folded line of your fabric and cut out a piece from the PUL and the fleece.
make sure you mark all the snap markings (shown as stars on the pattern) on your fabric
* first you will apply the snaps to the PUL fabric only, and ONLY the bottom snaps, there will be 14.

TIP: when applying the snaps cut small squares of fabric and put the snaps through the small square AND your top piece, it just makes them a little more sturdy. 

*Put both pieces of fabric right side together and pin all around.
*fold flap (dotted line on pattern) and pin then sew. this will be where the back elastic goes.
* starting from the back where you just sewed the back flap, sew all the way around making sure you don't sew the pocket closed (look at the fuzzibunz image if you need)
* put the elastic through the back slot ( i estimated the length, i would make it looser rather than tighter) sew it at both ends
* using a zig zag stitch, start sewing the elastic for the legs at the markings shown on the pattern,
AS YOU SEW, PULL THE ELASTIC TIGHT- AS TIGHT AS YOU CAN!
*do this to both legs

*turn right side in, DONT PANIC! it will look freaky, i promise it will get better.
* So next, top stitch all the way around, as you get to the elastic, move your stitches to the inside of the elastic and pull it out straight as you go.
* then, apply the wing snaps.
FINISHED

Little Coasters

I love these little coasters by Yvonne, she has the pattern for them in here shop (for free) on her blog. The Yvestown Blog 

I remember attempting to make these pretty little things in my very first week of crochet life (a long time ago now) and not succeeding! I decided to revisit them this week and was so glad i did! They look darling on our white coffee table! 

To make mine i used hobby lobbys i love this cotton in blue, white and yellow. I think they would make a great inexpensive christmas gift!

Crochet Sandwich

I Have been crocheting these little play food sandwiches for a toddler activity bag swap i'm doing with friends. I know theres crochet food pattern books out there but as i don't have one, i pretty much just had to make my pattern myself. I DID google it a lot and compiled different ideas from free patterns i found online to find my final product. 

The sandwich is made up of 2 slices of bread, a slice of cheese, tomato and lettuce. My husband keeps telling me to add some meat but for now i'm happy with this simple lay out.

hook size 5.mm 

Bread (make 4 to get 2 slices of bread)

- Chain 19

- Hdc in second chain from hook & each remaining chain

- chain 1 & turn

- *Hdc in each stitch across chain 1 & turn*

- repeat from * to * until you have 11 rows

- tie off & weave in ends

To assemble place 2 brown bread squares together and single crochet around the edge.

Cheese slice

- chain 14

- Hdc in second chain from hook & each remaining chain

- chain 1 & turn

- *Hdc in each stitch across chain 1 & turn*

- repeat from * to * until you have 9 rows

- single crochet around the edge

- tie off & weave in ends

Tomato

- Magic loop 

- 8 Hdc in loop join with slip stitch

- chain 1 2Hdc in each stitch around join with slip stitch 

- chain 2 

- Dc in same space as the chain chain 2 

- *skip one  2Dc in same space,  chain 2*

- repeat from * to * around 

- join with slip stitch tie off & weave in ends

Lettuce

I found the lettuce pattern here, this was the only one i didn't come up with myself.
